autumn

autumn fall leaves
Autumn is starting to creep up on my little hometown.

spiny berries
It's always been my favorite season-- school supplies, sweaters, hot chocolate, and apple pie are some of my very favorite things, and autumn is the perfect season for them.

The leaves here are starting to change-- it's almost time for cardigans and tights and woolly socks!

autumn fall leaves
But as much as I love fall, I'm not looking forward to the shorter days and chilly nights.

I'll just have to make sure I have lots of cozy quilts to curl up in.

And in the meantime, I'll squeeze in as many walks to the park and sundresses as I can.

dewy spiderweb-- this ivy is gone now, it was cut a few days after I took this picture.  I hope the little guy or girl who made this beautiful structure has found a new home and is enjoying redecorating!

snuggly cats.  Aww.

Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers-- I love the soft cream and pink of this one!

much love, monday

Happy Monday!
Here's what I'm loving this week.

this illustration of my favorite scene from The Wind in the Willows,  when Ratty and Mole have a picnic on the river

acorns
these acorns-- so many gorgeous shades of brown!

the hobbit
the hobbit
these preview photos from The Hobbit-- Bag End is one of my favorite places in all of Lord of the Rings, and I am so excited to see more of it when The Hobbit comes out!  I love the story of how the Bag End set was originally designed for the Lord of the Rings films-- John Howe, one of the best-known Tolkien artists, had previously done a beautiful illustration of the front hall of Bag End.  He was brought on as a conceptual artist for the films, and Peter Jackson had a copy of the illustration and asked John Howe to draw the rest of Bag End, too.  How incredible that must have been, to see an illustration done years before turned into a full-sized environment!
(this moment of Lord of the Rings fangirling was brought to you by the extended edition DVDs of all three films.)

glitter pumpkin candle
these glittery pumpkins-- I'm not usually a glitter person, but these are so ethereal and pretty!  I'd feel like Titania having an autumn fairy ball with these.  (again, with tutorial!  yay!)

I hope your week is off to a wonderful start!

westbrook

Good morning!
I mentioned a few posts back that I had gone to Connecticut for a fife and drum muster.  Here are a few of my favorite moments from the weekend!

rock sculptures garden
When I was younger, my family used to go visit my grandparents on Cape Cod, and we always stopped at the Danbury, Connecticut rest stop to stretch our legs and have a picnic lunch.  The ground was always covered with these cool little rock sculptures.  A few years ago the rock sculptures disappeared, but this year when we stopped on our way to the Westbrook Muster, the sculptures were back!  Yay!

fife and drum westbrook muster
I watched the parade next to a very sweet man who had been coming to the muster for over thirty years.  Every year, he checks off the corps that perform, "just to keep track."

frogs
Our main canopy ended up right over a little puddle where water from the nearby basketball court drained, so we had eight amphibious companions for the festivities.  It was really interesting to see their behavior-- at any given time, two of them were standing guard either side of the drain pipe.  It was a little strange on the first day, having a frog pond in the middle of the campsite, but by Sunday, it somehow seemed perfectly normal!

I hope your weekend is off to a fantastic start!
Tomorrow I'm going to a wool and fiber festival, and I'll be hugging alpacas as much as I can.  They have the cutest little faces, how could anyone be expected to resist?
Have a lovely Saturday!

fill-in-the-blank friday

1. My favorite grade in school was sixth grade-- I had three fantastic best friends (including Marissa, my best friend in the world!), and we were given a lot of freedom since we never really misbehaved.  Our two teachers (one for English and history, one for math and science) were really sweet, too.  For instance, one of our assigned reading books was Wringer by Jerry Spinelli, and if you know me in real life, you know that I'm pretty sensitive when it comes to animals.  And Wringer is about exactly what it sounds like it would be about (and that is as much description as I can go into without getting both teary and rage-y).  I read the whole thing in one night, came back to my teacher the next day and said, "I can't spend a month re-reading and discussing this, it's too upsetting."  He thought about it for a moment, and he suggested that I bring in a book of my own choosing, and I could spend English period just reading whatever I wanted.  I spent the next few weeks reading Gone With the Wind, with occasional meetings with my teacher to talk about it with him.  Now that I've gone through ten more years of schooling, it seems even more incredible to me that I was allowed to do that.

2. My favorite teacher was my wonderful sewing teacher, Mrs. Wells, because she taught me all of my basic sewing skills and she's one of the warmest, most genuinely caring people I've ever met.  I spent every study hall sewing in her classroom.  I also spent most 'Spirit Games Days' there-- I've never been a fan of crowded, loud places, and I much preferred a classroom with just the hum of my sewing machine to a gymnasium full of screaming high-schoolers.

3. The highest level of education I have completed is my BFA in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology.  Woohooooo!

4. School lunches for me were usually a peanut butter sandwich and chocolate soy milk.  I think I bought school lunch maybe three times in my life.

5. The amount of money you'd have to pay me to go back to high school is ...Bahaha.  Right.  There is not enough money in the world to make me go back to high school.

6. A few things that will always remind me of going back to school are post-it notes, planners, and alarm clocks.

7. The first day of school was always both exciting and alarming.  I loved finding out what I'd be learning that semester, but for some reason, I was super stressed-out about choosing seats or having them assigned for classes.  Isn't that a weird concept, once you've been to college, the idea that you not only have to sit in the same seat every day, but that someone else picks it ahead of time?

I hope those of you who are still in school had a great first (or second or third) week!

much love, tuesday

Hi friends!
I don't know what the deal is with Mondays lately-- I've been either traveling or ridiculously busy every Monday for the past few weeks!  But even though I've been on the go, I've still been amassing lots of finds to share.  Here are a few for this week!

I hope you all had a lovely weekend (3 days for US and Canadian pals!  Yay!) and that your week is off to a great start!

caturday hijinks.

When Marissa visited a few weeks ago, she got ahold of my camera and ambushed Bucky during his relaxation time.  (y'know, as opposed to the rest of the time when he's working for a living.  mmhm.)
siamese cat
He was tolerant at first.

siamese cat
Eventually he started getting a little irked.

siamese cat
And finally he called us into his office for a talk.
(watching him try to turn around to face outward in this tiny space-- which has no impetus for him to go in it to begin with-- was highly amusing.)

I hope you're having a wonderful weekend so far-- anyone else excited about Doctor Who airing tonight?
Yay!
