fill-in-the-blank friday

1. My favorite room in my house is: I'm actually going to mention that I live in a college dormitory for the majority of the year, so I live in one room that functions as my bedroom, kitchen, living room, and studio.  And I love it.  I've always liked small-space living, actually.  In seventh grade we had to design our dream house for a tech. ed. class and mine was a very small octagonal house with a spiral staircase in the middle that didn't actually go anywhere.  I just wanted to have it there so I could sit at the top.

2. My current decor style is cozy, feminine nature-child but I wish it were more uncluttered.  That's the problem with having standard-issue college furniture-- it's not really tailored to the needs of a fashion design student (please excuse my terrible pun) and while it's good for storing notebooks and papers, things of that nature, there's really nowhere to store fabric and big weirdly shaped rulers.  Once I'm in my own place (aaaaaah!!!!) I'll have more flexible storage arrangements.

3. I wish I could redecorate my floor to make it something other than orange.  Whose brilliant idea was that?  Actually, the carpet in my room is orange, too.  I am cursed to always have orange floors, apparently.

4. My dream house absolutely has to have lots of light, and maybe even a windowseat.  I do so love a good windowseat.

5. One house item I'm willing to splurge on is a nice bed and good bedding.  I'm a cranky girl if I don't sleep well, and we spend a third of our lives asleep, so I think it's worth it to spend that time in cute and comforting place.

6. A decor trend that I just don't "get" is severely chipping paint.  I loooove the cottage-y, shabby-chic look and I know that brand new coats of paint can seem artificial, but seeing bits of my house chipping away would leave me feeling uncomfortably vulnerable.  Not to mention the high chance that paint old enough to be chipping like that contains lead, endangering any chats or enfants in the area.  I' much prefer  a new matte-finish coat of paint, even if it doesn't look as genuinely cottage-y.

7. Cozy blankets, twinkle lights, battery-operated tea lights, and lots of mugs for tea are little touches that make my house feel like home.

nesting

My new bedding came in the mail today!

anthropologie oh to dream bedding

anthropologie oh to dream bedding

Isn't it lovely?  It's so cozy.

Just in case you're wondering, the pillow with the girl's face is from Vintage Jane.  My mom got it for me.  She knows me so well.  I made the other two small pillows.

I had to go to Bed, Bath, and Beyond to get Euro-sized pillows for my new pillowcases.  They are enormous!  And they come in verrrry slippery plastic packaging, which made carrying two of them nearly impossible.  Whose brilliant idea was that?  They slid right out of my arms three or four times.  One of those times was on the escalator, and I could just visualize how ridiculous I must have looked, which made me laugh even more.  Not my finest moment, perhaps, but highly amusing.

I've also been admiring these flowers in my room.

pink flowers

I love, love, love pink and yellow flowers.  My favorite bouquet I've ever received was made up of peachy-pink and pale yellow roses, with lovely little pink curlicues coming through them.  My parents gave it to me, it must have been after a school play or a chorus concert.  They were so wonderful about that, they brought me flowers after every dance recital, every vocal performance, and every school play.    Even when I graduated FIT with my Associate's degree, my mom gave me a beautiful yellow corsage to wear during the ceremony.

What's your favorite flower?

bird of the summer

Just the result of some late-night crafting on Friday....

Mini-bunting!

This is my desk!  I spend a lot of time here.  And now it's a little cuter.

I'm going to be adding mini-bunting to my etsy shop too-- look for it in a few days!  yay!

oh, and the title of this post is from this song, which I've been listening to a lot.

nesting ♥

Oh my goodness, this week has been a whirlwind.  I'm back in the city, attending RA training every day and working on RA stuff (bulletin boards, door decorations, inventories) every night.  Can we just talk for a moment about how much I love the people I work with?  What a supportive, fun, sweet group.  And, since I'm back in the city, I'm in my new room!  I moved up two floors in my building, and now I have a tiny bit of a view of the Empire State Building again, yay!  More importantly, I'm getting some more light in my room, especially that gorgeous seven-o-clock-ish, soft, golden-pink light that I love so much.  I finished putting up my decorations tonight, now it really feels like my room.  Please pardon the mess on my desk, I was mid-paperwork but too impatient to put off taking the picture!  (you can click on the photo for a bigger version)

new york ♥

photo

In less than twelve hours, I'll be back to New York.  I'm so excited.... I miss the city.  This is the first time I've felt that way.  I always have missed my room by the end of the summer, and having daily routines, but this is the first time that I've really missed the city itself.  So here are a few of the things I'm looking forward to when I get back to my lovely little island.

  • decorating my room, of course!  My wall decals arrived right on time, and I drew out some possible floor-plans for my room (yes, I'm that obsessed with it).  And I have sheer gauzy curtains now, yay!

  • going to the new section of the High Line to do my required reading for the honors program at my school.  I did this last year and it was so, so lovely, and this year I'll have ten new blocks to explore!

  • RA training.  I know it's geeky of me to enjoy this so much, but I'm a sucker for a good team-building exercise.  That aspect, paired with my fondness for paperwork and slightly tedious tasks (no, I'm not kidding, I actually love those.  I'd be a kick-ass secretary.), RA training is one of my favorite weeks.

  • Afternoons at S'nice!  I did most of the work for my online class last semester while at my favorite table at S'nice with a glass of chamomile tea and for some reason it's a place that I'm extra-super-productive.

  • Being within easy walking distance of my very favorite Anthropologie, the one in Chelsea Market.  Oh, thank god, because I'm going into some serious withdrawal.

  • Seeing my pally pals, yaaaaay!!!!

I'll take photos of my room tomorrow, before and after decorating.

On a completely unrelated note, I have a little request for you, lovelies...

I so, so appreciate your reading my little pastel corner of the internet, each and every one of you.   I try to make my blog content as pretty and honest and interesting as possible.  Which is why it's kind of a bummer to see the stuff from here posted elsewhere with no mention of having seen it here, especially when it happens frequently within a short time frame.  I'm all for sharing the loveliness, that's what blogs are for!  But if you come across something here that you like and you post it somewhere else, pretty please link back?

Thank you darlings!

One of my summer projects:  figuring out how to make my dorm room look like this next year.  So, so pretty.

New Nest

Here are some pictures of my room and what I've been doing in it... But first, click play on this video, it's the perfect soundtrack for my room.  Yay!

Ok, so, my room!  It's pretty similar to my room last year, except that the wall decals are more elaborate and I now have a big cozy blue chair in one corner.  It's the nicest thing, it's really big and I can completely curl up in it.

There's something about going grocery shopping and then coming home and putting them away that makes me so happy.

***********

I have a slight obsession with black ballet flats.  I just love them.  I was lucky enough to be given a big box of different vintage bows and beaded shapes recently, and I knew they'd look so perfect on black ballet flats, but I didn't want to have to buy ten pairs of shoes to put them on (well, okay, yes I did want to, but it would be totally impractical) sooo...

velcro-on ballet flat embellishments!  I put the fuzzy sides of stick-on velcro dots on the shoes, and then put the hook side of velcro dots on the back of the bows and beaded shapes, and now they can be changed whenever!  Wheeeeee!

After some trial-and-error, I've finally pretty much gotten the hang of using the knitting machine for my machine knitting class.  Here's one of the swatches I knitted!  It's sooo fast, this took maybe 4 or 5 minutes to do.

Happy Saturday! ♥
