from the weekend

Hi lovelies!  As I mentioned, my wonderful mom came to the city for a long weekend.  It was so much fun!  We met up with my super-fantastically-awesome cousin Kaleigh for some of our wandering around on Friday...

...and here are a few of the things we encountered.

adorable sign for a store that I always mean to go in but somehow never d0... note to self: go into store when next in the West Village.

hummus, falafel, and pitas from Hummus Place- my mom and I both opted for the hummus with mushrooms.  which is incredibly delicious.

angry robot building-topper guy!  grrrr!

pretty color-arranged music books at the Julliard bookstore

It was so great to have some family time.  I can't wait to see my mom and Kaleigh again.  Yay!

lovely-perfect-wonderful day ♥

Yesterday was such a good day!  I don't have classes on Fridays, so I like getting lots of work done so I can have at least a bit of free time on the weekend.  I usually head over to 'Snice (on West 4th and 8th) in the morning.  Usually this guy is sun-lounging on the outside stand of a flower shop on the way over, like he was yesterday.  Which just completely makes my morning.

He's always up for some petting and paw-kneading.

When I get to 'Snice, my favorite table is the one in the front window.  It was taken when I first got there yesterday, but I strategically positioned myself to be able to see when it became available and then nabbed it.  (Yes, it is kind of an involved process.  What can I say, I really like that table.  It's sunny and if the door is propped open there's a nice breeze.)

my favorite 'Snice breakfast, oatmeal with dried fruit and mint tea

I read a good amount of the first two acts of A Midsummer Night's Dream for my (awesome) Shakespeare class, but I was getting warm and sleepy, so I went over to the High Line to finish reading and do the response questions.  It was such a good day for seat-getting, I was able to snag one of the wooden lounge chair things, which are usually full (and which were swarmed a few minutes after I got there-- yay for unplanned good timing!)

I was in the water-feature area, which is lovely because it softens the noise of the city, and little kids get all excited and run around in it.  The chair-ish thing that I was on was surrounded by greenery on three sides and it felt like a private little reading nook.

hope you had a wonderful Friday too!

I can't even express how excited I am.

Because one of my favorite musicians is going to be at my favorite location of my favorite store tomorrow night.

saturday adventures

So, was everyone else aware that there's a Kinokuniya store in Manhattan?  I sure wasn't.  Probably because it's in midtown, which I generally try my best to avoid.  But in my fruitless attempts to get a book for school at the 5th Ave. Barnes and Noble, I ran into my own little craft-supply nirvana.  I've been sliiiiightly obsessed with washi tape recently, and Kinokuniya has an amazing selection.

mmm, cell phone picture quality.  forgot my camera at home.

Just ridiculously cute.  The ones I bought are currently just hanging around on my desk next to my notebooks.  Looking over at them makes me so excited to create cute, happy things.  And that whole shop made me think of this song by The Bird and the Bee.

So, yes, Kinokuniya, on 6th Ave. between 40th and 41st, definitely check it out for a dose of sugary-sweet cuteness and awesome stationery.

Oh, and this was on a door I passed on my way home.

...Shouldn't this be unnecessary?

How are you all spending the long weekend (if you're in the U.S., otherwise, how are you spending your regular-length weekend)?

museum of natural history pt. 4

Hi lovelies!  Last part of the photos from my Museum of Natural History trip last week: finished gems.

This was one of my favorite parts of the museum.  Not just because I'm a girl and thus have a bit of an 'ooooh, sparkly!' magpie-style reaction to shiny things, either.  In a time where everything is digitally enhanced, it was way cool to be reminded that there are such pure, saturated, clear colors that occur naturally.

Also, I had a really good first week of school!  I can't believe I'm a senior in college...eek!  My mom sent me a really sweet first-day-of-school email on Tuesday, and all my classes have been interesting and fun.  Instead of getting overwhelmed by the huge variety of things that I need to learn and do for my classes, I'm going to try to think of it as pursuing a bunch of interests.  I'm kind of realizing that this is the last time in my life where all I need to do is show up, learn, and create, and I want to take full advantage of that.  How was your first week, lovelies?

bonne nuit, mes amis belle!

museum of natural history pt. 3

And now for my personal favorites, the unfinished minerals... I love that you can touch so many of these, they're not behind glass or anything.

museum of natural history pt. 2

Just some photos of the animal section of the Museum of Natural History... It's always weird taking pictures of animals there because...y'know... they don't actually go anywhere.  You can stand there all day and take pictures, but the animals are going to stay just exactly the way they are.  It's been a while since I've been to the Museum, and I think it sort of slipped my mind, because I found their stationary behavior particularly bizarre this time.  Although it would be much more bizarre if they were to stop being stationary.  But anyway.

That last one is actually from the dinosaur exhibit, but since I'm not much of a dinosaur person that was the only photo I took.  I like the thought of dinosaurs, which I generally think of as being on the ferocious-and-slimy side, making sure that their kids had a nice, cozy, dry egg.

museum of natural history, pt. 1

I spent a few very pleasant hours yesterday at the Museum of Natural History.  I've mentioned my love for planetariums before, and that's the main reason I wanted to go.  The planetarium show was really good, and just to up my geek-cred even more, it was narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, a.k.a. Guinan from Star Trek: The Next Generation.  Mmhm, I'm that kind of nerd.

I took lots and lots of pictures (though not in the planetarium, obviously), so I'll be posting them by exhibit over the next few days.  Here are some from the hall of earth and space, which focuses on asteroids and volcanic activity.

[caption id="attachment_1957" align="aligncenter" width="480" caption="this has nothing to do with any exhibits, I just liked the floor."][/caption]

Hope you're all staying safe during this hurricane craziness!  It hasn't even started raining yet in Manhattan, and my building is just baaaaarely in Zone C (Zone A is the one most at risk), almost not in any zone at all, so I'm not overly worried.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

hi there

this morning was my first trip up to the High Line since section 2 was opened.  it was lovvvvvely.

 cutest water-fountain sign ever!

these birdhouses and perches were part of the new section.

how cute are these little guys?

a raspberry-basil popsicle from the People's Pops stand on the High Line, it was delicious.  they have a lot of other yummy-sounding flavors, too, like apricot-lavender.

happy monday, lovelies!

trust30 project: day 5

Catching up on two trust30 posts today, because every time I felt like blogging yesterday I was thwarted by thunder and lightning.  I love the day 5 prompt though!

There are two of these that I absolutely can't choose between because I love them both so much.

Venice...

and Montmartre, in Paris...

the pink, the mint green, the narrow street with a cobbled sidewalk-- a flat over the Maison Rose Cafè would be just perfect, thank you.

As for what I'm doing to get there, I've started learning French, and eventually I'd like to learn Italian, too.  I want to have a realistic experience when I go to these beautiful places, and be able to interact without sticking out as a tourist.

even during the summer, sundays still feel like sundays.
