the wayside inn

longfellow's wayside inn sign
A few weekends ago, my mom and I headed up to The Wayside Inn, in Sudbury, Massachusetts-- the same Wayside Inn that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote about in his famous Tales of a Wayside Inn.  We were there for the Sudbury Colonial Faire, a fife and drum muster that also has a full-blown colonial gathering with period-appropriate dancing, food, and crafts.

revolutionary war reenactment colonial
uh-oh.
There was also a reenactment of a Revolutionary War skirmish-- it was pretty intense.  I was standing near a little boy and his dad, and the father kept trying to explain what was happening in a historically unbiased manner, which doesn't necessarily compute with a four-year-old who's used to having clearly defined 'good guys' and 'bad guys.'

church weathervane gold
I really like weathervanes-- there were some beautiful ones around The Wayside Inn.  This one was on top of a church.

bridge in the forest fairytale
this little pathway looked completely untouched by time, it was like something out of a fairytale.

did I mention that there were a lot of guys firing muskets?  well, there were a whole lot of guys firing a whole lot of muskets.

dreamy stone wall forest autumn
I love old stone walls-- I love imagining how many people in different time periods touched this one as they were out for a walk in the woods.

yellow gold berries dew
these golden berries were growing everywhere.

feather weathervane
This is one of my favorite weathervanes ever-- simple and clean and pretty.

I hope you've enjoyed a peek into my trip to The Wayside Inn!

much love monday

Hi everyone!
As you can see, the new blog design is up and running!  I'll probably continue to tweak things for the next week or so, but overall, it's set up.  I'd love to hear your opinions!
Here's what I'm loving this week.

this cutie-- I'm going to be a black cat for Halloween.  And I'll have yarn with me.  Let's face it, I always have yarn with me.

fill-in-the-blank friday

1. My favorite flower is ...oooh, there are a lot of those.  I don't think there are many flowers I don't like!  I especially love hydrangeas, ranunculus, daffodils, and lilies of the valley.

2. You should never talk about politics unless you know 100% absolutely for sure that you're in a group of like-minded individuals, especially with people you're going to be seeing again on a regular basis.  People very, very rarely change each other's political opinions, and it's not worth losing friendships over.

3. My favorite discovery of late is that Altoids Smalls tins are the perfect size for transporting pins, stitch markers, and safety eyes for crafts.  It's such a compact way to carry small things without bringing your entire supply.

4. This fall, you will probably find me wearing twirly dresses or skirts, black tights, ballet flats or boots with woolly socks, and cozy cardigans.  And I wore my winter coat for the first time today, I was so excited!

5. I wish I were ...nope, I'm pretty content right at the moment!  I've got a purring kitty on my lap, I'm wearing one of my favorite sweaters, and I have a lovely afternoon and evening planned.  I'll save my wish for another time.

6. My favorite tv show at the moment is Once Upon a Time.  Of course a show centered on fairytales is my favorite.  I also love The Mindy Project, New Girl, Parks and Recreation, and The Office.  I love Doctor Who, too, but I don't seem to ever be around on Saturday nights when it's on, so I'll probably end up waiting until this season appears on Netflix.

7. This weekend I want to do lots of knitting, get ready for the Halloween Extravaganza I'll be having with Marissa (party of two!), and...redesign this whole blog.  As it gets further into autumn, I want it to be a little cozier.  So hopefully by the next time you stop by, I'll have redecorated!
Have a beautiful day!

wednesdays are the best days.

crows in tree
This Wednesday was chilly and gray.

Description of Photo
So I bundled up in my coziest sweater...

...and I walked to my local yarn shop for the weekly knitting group!

rowan lace yarn the gentle arts
It's such a warm, inviting place to be on a cold day-- both from the yarn and from the owners and other knitters who braved the cold to get there.

blue yarn the gentle arts
I was there from eleven to five-- at half past one, we all ordered soup from a nearby café and put down our knitting needles for a lunch break!

yarn sheep the gentle arts
...this sheep looks like it might be having a lunch break, too.

louisa harding yarn the gentle arts
This is new yarn from one of my favorite yarn designers, Louisa Harding.  Her colors are always so beautiful.

After a wonderful day, I packed up my knitting bag and headed home.

It was just perfect.
I can't wait until next Wednesday!

s/s2013 favorites

Hello lovelies!
It feels like it's been a million yeeeeears since I've posted, even though it's actually been what, maybe a week?  I finally got the whole computer situation under control after a harrowing few days of technical difficulties-- so now I'm back!  Yay!

Today I'd like to share some of my favorite looks from the Spring/Summer 2013 fashion shows.

Burberry Prorsum-- I love how delicate the lace hem is on a classically masculine piece like a trench.

Ruffian Spring Summer 2013 SS2013
Ruffian-- This whole collection has a fun, Marie-Antoinette-gone-punk look, but I especially love this t-shirt.  It would be so cute tucked into a circle skirt.

So how are you all?  It's so nice to be back!
I hope you're having a great Tuesday!

techno-fail

Hi friends,
So, it's been a little quiet around here lately.
This is because my trusty macbook is very, very cranky.
It looks like I'm going to need to do a complete reformat.
that's right, it makes me feel like a Time Lord in the rain.
that might be a bit of an exaggeration.
I think I actually sighed and said, "Jeez louise."
Probably not quite the same as accidentally trapping Rose Tyler in a parallel universe.
But you get the idea.

I'm going to be reformatting it tomorrow-- wish me luck!
I'll be back to regular posting soon.
