dunzo list

Lately I have finished a lot of things.

In other words, I have a bunch of things on my dunzo list which should definitely be spelled 'donezo' considering it's based on the word 'done,' but apparently this nonsensical word is also spelled nonsensically.

Except, unlike Tom's list, mine are all good things!

First up:  the Woodland Gable wrap.


Here it is, on display in my local yarn shop.  I'm so pleased with how it turned out-- and it's absolutely enormous!  As it should be, considering that there's nearly a mile of yarn in this wrap.


My LYS owner, Jan, did a gorgeous job of displaying the wrap, of course.
She has such an eye for visual merchandising.

Next on the dunzo list: the Bonjour, Girl socks!

Ta-da!  These are the softest, coziest socks in the world (or at least in my sock drawer.  Close enough.).  I love the cable and lace pattern on the front of the socks, but fair warning: the heel instructions for this pattern are a little bit questionable.  After some research, I think the problem is the instructions for doing wrap and turn short rows.  In short, this pattern instructs the knitter to start wrapping the stitch before slipping it to the left needle, so the stitch ends up being on the wrong side of the wrap when you go to knit them together.  At first I thought it was just that this was my first time turning heels, but it looks like other people on Ravelry have had the same issue with this pattern.  As long as you know to look out for it, and use alternate wrap and turn instructions, I think you'd be okay knitting this pattern.  For more details on other modifications I made to this pattern, check out my Ravelry project page.

Lastly, I'm dunzo with reading The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff (which still looks exactly the same, so no photograph of that.).  Overall, it was a satisfying read.  One rather major plot point came to a conclusion that felt like a bit of a cop-out to me, but in general, I was happy with the way things turned out.  How's that for vague and mysterious?

bears. beets. battlestar galactica.

So guys.  

This morning I was spinning away on this beautiful tonal yellow wool, which is going to become a ruffled scarf.  I'm really pleased with how it's coming out, but as I was spinning it, I kept thinking, "What is this color combination reminding me of?"

And then it hit me.

Oh.

It's Dwight-shirt yellow.

If you've been visiting for a while, you know that I love The Office.

And now that I've seen the connection between my yarn and Dwight's color of choice, I can't un-see it.

It's also the color of Jim-as-Dwight's shirt in my absolute favorite moment in the entire series.

(it's in season 3, episode 20.  I laugh until I cry every time I watch it.  ohhhh jeez, I'm giggling just thinking about it.) 

So now this yarn is going to be my "Bears.  Beets.  Battlestar Galactica." scarf.

And I'm kind of excited about it.

man of a thousand faces

My go-to television show to watch every semester while I am hand-stitching my hems is The Office.
In fact, I have sort of an unofficial tradition of watching every single episode by the end of the semester.
Right now I'm on season seven.  So I'm on track.
However, after eight semesters of this, I think I may have actually watched it too much.
Whenever something exasperating or bemusing happens, I find myself turning to an imaginary camera and making a Jim-face.

...Wow.  This post has gotten out of control.  I was only going to include maybe five of my favorite Jim-faces, but they are all so good.

incidentally, most of the gifs in this post are via jimhalpertfaces on tumblr.  if you do one thing today, follow them.  because there's like thirty pages of Jim-face goodness.  

THIRTY.  PAGES.

once upon a time

Hello lovelies!

Please pardon the silence here in blog-land for the past few days, my wonderful best friend Marissa was up for the weekend and we were busy having lots of fun.

One of the things we were busy doing was watching Once Upon a Time.  I had never seen it before and I.  Am.  Obsessed.

Snow White is my favorite based purely on how adorable her hair and clothing are.

Her real-world alter ego is Mary Margaret, who wears a lot of super-cute outfits.

I think my reaction to Mary Margaret's apartment was to grab Marissa's arm and shriek "OH MY GOSH I NEED IT I NEED IT RIGHT NOW!"

(...I really do need it though.)

So now I'm completely hooked on the show.  Anyone else watch it?  Who's your favorite character?

It's that special time of the semester-- that time when I'm at my desk more than I'm in my bed, my hair is permanently in a bun, and my hands are consistently covered in markers and pinpricks.  And that means a whoooole lot of Netflix is being watched in a certain room on the sixth floor.  My latest episode-marathon?  Gossip Girl.  Oh jeez.

I'm on the fourth season of the ridiculous-yet-strangely-addictive series.  The plots are kind of...y'know... completely absurd, but the fashion is usually really, really cute.  I think overall Blair's clothes are my favorite... especially this outfit, her hair here is my holy grail of coiffures and I'm on an A-line dress kick (which I am always on, come to think of it).



I like Jenny's style from the first season, too... her green Valentino coat is so, so cute.

look at the flowers!  a peter pan collar covered in flowers.  what's not to love?

This blue coat is adorable too... the quilted yoke is a nice detail.  But I will never understand why it was necessary to turn Jenny into a moping super-goth.  I mean, I know that Taylor Momsen is all about the black eyeliner and the leather leggings, but...I dunno.  I always think it's a mistake to change a character to mimic the style and personality of the actress, because in that case, where is the acting?  Or maybe I'm just bitter over the loss of the possibility of several hundred more pastel ensembles.

And then we have the dialogue... some of my favorite oft-repeated lines?

• "It's like I don't even know you anymore!"


• "I'm not a little girl anymore!"


• "This means war!"


• "I will destroy you!"

Ha.  What a riot.  While often ridiculous, the show is apparently compelling because.... I have it on right now, as I'm typing this.  It's my escapist, not-so-secret shame.

What's your television guilty pleasure?  Because I only have 14 episodes left.

my pocket protector is showing

I've been working my way through Star Trek: Voyager while doing homework... this moment just became my favorite part of any Star Trek episode ever.

I'm still giggling about it.

I love a good courtroom drama, so I decided to give Ally McBeal a try.

Pros:

• Um, legal stuff!  I like that sort of thing.


• The way it's edited to show Ally's thoughts is really imaginative and fun.


• Calista Flockhart is so much better than I expected, yay!


• The characters are all pretty well developed, with their own personalities and quirks


• Occasionally, cute clothes sneak onto the show!  I love these mittens.

Cons:

• Sometimes really, really bad 90's fashion rears its ugly head:

• The guy that Ally is in love with for the first few seasons is such a jerk that I pretty much didn't care about that entire plotline.


• The character that I like best, John Cage, is always getting broken up with, which is sad because he's probably the one who deserves happiness most.


• Sometimes I just want Ally to do a good job and win her case without needing to have an epiphany about her personal life to do so.

I've felt lately that this blog has been distinctly lacking in fluff.  So here we have it: What I've been watching on Netflix, and what I think about it.  And since I like any excuse to use bullet points, it's going to be in the form of pros and cons!  wheee, lists!

Parks and Recreation

Pros

• I thought Rashida Jones was very funny on The Office and it's nice to have a show that showcases her.


• Actually, the whole cast is great-- there's nobody totally unlikeable, like Creed on The Office.  (No offense if Creed is your favorite character, I just... oh, who am I kidding, I think he's a totally pointless character.)


• I actually physically laugh at least two or three times every episode.


• Sometimes cute clothes sneak onto the show, like this intarsia bow sweater:

  Cons


• The guys on this show kind of suck.  Not in that the actors are bad, because they're great, but the characters totally don't deserve any of the girls..and yet the girls are with them.  Discouraging.


• Also, this gives me verrrrry little faith in local government, I'm hoping they've exaggerated the inefficiency.
